Founder Unveils Slate Belt Chapter of Guardian Angels

WIND GAP- Guardian Angels founder, Curtis Sliwa, introduced the Slate Belt Chapter of the Guardian Angels at a special ceremony on Friday, June 29 at Colonial Academy School in Wind Gap. Nine men and women from the Slate Belt completed 12 weeks of training to prepare them to be the eyes and ears of the Slate Belt. The new chapter is carved out of the Bangor Block Watch and is led by Chapter Leader Dwayne Mullikin and Assistant Chapter Leader Chris Shandler. The group was set to debut at the Liberty Carnival this past weekend but was asked to leave their organization and colors at home by the fire company’s president. The Slate Belt Guardian Angels, with trademark red berets, will patrol the upcoming Slate Belt Heritage Days and Roseto Big Time.

The Slate Belt Guardian Angels would like to express their appreciation to those listed below for all their support. If not for their support a Slate Belt chapter would not have been possible.

36th Annual Antique Gas Engine & Tractor Show This Weekend

BANGOR- Blue Mountain Antique Gas & Steam Engine Association, Inc. will hold its 36th annual Antique Gas Engine & Tractor Show from Friday, July 20 through Sunday, July 22. The event will be held at the Jacktown Community Center on Bangor-Richmond Road in Bangor. The grounds will open each day at 7 AM and serve breakfast until 10 AM. The event features gas engines, steam and farm tractors, shingle mills, water pumps, crafts, pony rides and more. Great food and Jacktown ice cream will be on sale throughout the weekend. Movies at the Park Program Returns with “Charlotte’s Web”

PEN ARGYL- Pen Argyl's Weona Park will be offering a free showing of “Charlotte’s Web” as part of the Movies at the Park program this Friday, July 20 at 8:30 PM. The event is sponsored by Slate Belt Communities That Care and Northampton Community Prevention Collaboration in partnership with Pen Argyl Borough and Pen Argyl Athletic and Park Association. The movie is rated G and is open to the public.

A "Mid-Summer Nights" Swim at Bangor Memorial Park

BANGOR- Bangor Block Watch and Bangor Borough are sponsoring a free summer night swim from 7:30 to 9:30 PM on Wednesday, July 25 at Bangor Memorial Park. The free event will be held at the pool with music provided by Stasis. Only ages 12 through 18 will be admitted and a lifeguard will be on duty. The concession stand will be open as well. Bangor Block Watch and Bangor Borough hope to hold additional night swim events for other age groups in the future. For more information, email blockwatch@epix.net.

Slate Belt Museum Holding Book Signing & Slate Presentation

The Slate Belt Museum is hosting a book signing and slide presentation on how slate has been used in fine art and folk art on Sunday, July 29. Authors Judy and Ted Buswick will talk and show samples of slate art at the Museum at 1:30 PM. The presentation is free and open to the public. A portion of the sale of the authors' book, Slate of Hand: Stone for Fine Art & Folk Art, will benefit the Museum. The Buswick's, natives of Massachusetts, have done extensive research into the uses of slate both in the Slate Belt and Vermont, as well as in North Wales, particularly the Welsh towns of Bangor and Bethesda. They will be appearing at the Museum in conjunction with the Slate Belt Heritage Days, held from July 27 through July 29. The museum is located at 2214 North Delaware Drive in Mt. Big Time Queen and Court Announced

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church has announced the Queen and her court for the 114th annual Big Time. Amanda Impeciati of Roseto was named Queen. She is the daughter of Dominick and Debra Impeciati. The queen’s court includes First Princess Jenessa Smith, daughter of Jeffrey and Doreen Smith of Bangor and Second Princess Christina Casciano, daughter of Anthony P. and Toni Ann Casciano of Roseto. All will be honored at 6:30 PM on Saturday, July 28 at the Mt. Carmel Church Plaza. The Slate Belt Band will lead a parade down Roseto's Garibaldi Avenue.

Columbia Fire Company Holding 4-Man Scramble Golf Outing

Columbia Fire Company will hold their annual golf outing on Friday, August 10 at Green Pond Country Club in Bethlehem. The cost is $90 and registration begins at 8 AM accompanied by a continental breakfast. A shotgun start will begin the match at 9 AM. All golfers must dress in proper golf attire. Bangor Football 4-Man Scramble Golf Outing

The Bangor Slaters football program is sponsoring a 4-man scramble golf match on Sunday, August 5 at Cherry Valley Golf Course. The cost is $280 per foursome which includes greens fee, cart, beverages and lunch following the match at the Bangor Jacksonian Club. Prizes will be awarded during lunch and there will be a raffle. 2007 Green Knight Golf Open and Pig Roast

The Pen Argyl Green Knight wrestling and football teams are sponsoring a golf match and pig roast on Friday, July 27 at Green Pond Country Club. The format is Four-Man-Scramble with a 10 AM shotgun start. Prizes include Closest to the Pin, Longest Drive and Top Group. There will also be a 50/50 raffle. Weona Park Summer Sounds Featuring the Music of Dave Fry

The Weona Park Band Shell will host its next Summer Sounds concert on Sunday, July 22. Dave Fry will perform family and folk music. First Assembly of God Changes Name to Family Life Community Church

Following many years of being known as Jacktown Assembly, Richmond Assembly, Bangor Assembly, virtually everything but First Assembly of God, the church has changed its name to Family Life Community Church. The new name represents a church that cares about the family and helps them to make their way through life. Faith Alive Ministries Holding Vacation Bible School

Faith Alive Ministries invites all children to join them at Son Force Kids Vacation Bible School for fun and exciting adventures. Bangor Farmers Market Reopens July 21

The Bangor Farmers Market will be open Saturday, July 21 on the corner of First and Market Streets in Bangor. The market, sponsored by the Bangor Main Street Program and Bangor Borough, is open every other Saturday throughout the summer from 9 AM to 2 PM. FUMC of Wind Gap Sponsoring Bus Trip

The First United Church of Christ of Wind Gap is sponsoring a bus trip to see “Ed Sullivans Really Big Show” on August 8 at The Brownstone. Bangor Memorial Park Train Back on Track

The Bangor Elks is running the Bangor Memorial Park Train each Tuesday and Saturday throughout the summer. The hours are 5 to 7 PM on Tuesdays and 1 to 5 PM on Saturdays. All rides are free but donations are graciously accepted.

The HUB Hosting Kids Night Out

The HUB in Bangor holds Kids Night Out on the fourth Wednesday of the month from 6:30 to 8 PM for kids in kindergarten to 6th grade. Safe Haven Holding Volunteer Meetings Each Thursday

Safe Haven, a small group of experienced animal rescue volunteers based in Blakeslee, is holding volunteer meetings at 6:30 PM on the third Tuesday of each month at Cherry's Restaurant located on Route 209 in Kresgeville. If you are an animal lover and have a few hours to spare a month, Safe Haven could use your help at adoption days, flea markets, bake sales and other fund raisers to benefit their homeless animals. Waggin’ Tails Offering K9 Massage Session

Waggin’ Tails Pet Rescue is holding a session to introduce the dog's basic muscle structure and teach basic massage techniques for pets. The techniques are used to ease hip pain, back and knee problems, old age, excessive exercise, and general relaxation. The class is presented by Vyolet Albano, an animal communicator, canine massage practitioner, Reiki practitioner and Chi Master with more than 25 years in the animal health care and rehabilitation fields. The class will be held at 7 PM on Friday July 20 at the Waggin Tails office located on Route 209 in Brodheadsville (1/4 mile north of Route 715, next to the office of Dr. David H. Pierce).
