"Love! Valour! Compassion!" Coming
to the Civic Theatre
Terrence McNally's Tony Award-winning "Love!
Valour! Compassion!" arrives March 30 on the stage of Civic
Theatre of Allentown's Theatre514 black box performance space. Presented
in its Lehigh Valley premiere, the play is one of several that Civic
Artistic Director William Sanders worked on in their New York debuts,
which he subsequently directed for Civic.
Sanders was the assistant director for the original
1995 Broadway production of "Love! Valour! Compassion!"
which won the Tony Award for Best Play. Other plays he has reinterpreted
for the Civic stage after working on them in New York include: "Neil
Simon's Proposals," "A Man of No Importance" and
"The Vagina Monologues." Still other Civic productions
have been enhanced by his relationship with the shows' composers,
playwrights and directors.
Often, Sanders has collaborated with friend and
colleague Joe Mantello, the Tony Award-winning director who helmed
the original "Love! Valour!" production.
"Love! Valour! Compassion!" is the story
of eight men who hash out their passions, resentments and fears,
over the course of three summer weekends spent at a beautiful country
estate. The group of present and former lovers and friends grapple
with their developing emotions about each other -- and with the
AIDS crisis that was reaching its height at the time, when an HIV
diagnosis was a death sentence.
"It's an emotionally complicated play,"
Sanders says. "It's hilarious, but it's tragic, too. All of
the humor and warmth the characters experience is undercut by the
cruelty of this epidemic -- and often by their own cruelty. You
end up feeling hopeful and heartbroken all at once."
The production features: Gerard Lebeda as Gregory,
the choreographer who owns the estate, and who struggles with a
lisp and an aging body; Gary Gaugler as Bobby, Gregory's young lover,
who is blind; Mike Febbo as Arthur and Wayne Gmitter as Perry, a
committed couple who have mostly grown comfortable together; Robert
Callan Adams as Buzz, aficionado of the Broadway musical and HIV-positive;
Troy Dwyer as twins John and James, one an embittered composer and
accompanist, the other sweet-natured and succumbing to AIDS; and
Adrian Anchando as Ramon, the young Latino dancer whom John brings
along for the weekend and who shakes the others loose of their various
convictions. Lebeda appears as an Equity Guest Artist, courtesy
of Actors Equity Association. Caitlin McCown serves as production
stage manager. Noah Herman is assistant director.
"Love! Valour! Compassion!" runs March
30 through April 21 in Civic's Theatre 514. Performances are Wednesday
through Saturday at 8 PM and Sunday, April 1 and 15 at 2 PM. Tickets
range from $20 to $24, depending on the day, with discounts available
for students and seniors. Discounts are available for groups of
15 or more, including 40% discounts for opening weekend. This production
is recommended for mature audiences. The performance on Wednesday,
April 18, is interpreted in American Sign Language. Because of the
confines of Theatre514, the ASL interpreters will be located prominently
on stage.
Tickets and information are available at 610.432.8943,
or online at www.civictheatre.com
