Robert Doney’s Local Landscapes Displayed at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church

Local artist Robert Doney’s Local Landscapes will be on display through Sunday, February 25 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Easton. Doney’s work can be viewed from 12 to 3 PM. Doney is perhaps best known for his regional landscapes. He often sketches in pen-and-ink, and then brushes on watercolor. Doney has a studio-gallery at his home in Pen Argyl and his work also appears in private collections throughout the American Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states.

Doney studied at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn New York, Kutztown University, and Columbia Teachers College in New York City. He has taught at Lehigh University, Northampton Community College, and in Pennsylvania public schools for 27 years. He has received awards from the American Watercolor Society, Watercolor USA, Allentown Art Museum and Rehoboth Art League. Doney resides with his wife Bette, who is also a painter. Three Slate Belt Nursing Graduates Recognized at NCC

The following graduates of Northampton Community College's registered nursing program received their nursing pins in a formal ceremony held on campus in January. The pin signal, the achievement of an important milestone in the graduates' lives: the completion of their nursing degree. Many will wear it on their uniforms throughout their professional careers. Local individuals receiving their pins were Angelina Gneiting and Tammy Strohl from Pen Argyl and Beth Pantofel and Brian Swanson from Bangor.

More than 3000 students have graduated from NCC's registered nursing and licensed practical nursing programs since the college was founded.

Bangor Business Association Planning Mixer

The Bangor Business Association is holding The Bangor Business Owner’s Mixer from 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday, February 27 at The HUB. The event is a great opportunity for Bangor business owners to meet and network and talk about ways to revitalize Bangor’s business district. Refreshments will be provided.

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church Lent Services

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church will hold daily Mass Monday through Friday at 6:30 and 8 AM beginning Wednesday, February 21. Distribution of ashes will be offered on Ash Wednesday (February 21) during the 6:30 AM Mass, at the conclusion of the 8:15 Mass, between 3 and 3:30 PM and following the Stations of the Cross which begins at 7 PM.

Bangor Elks Youth Appreciation Event

The Bangor Elks will be holding a youth appreciation event on Sunday, February 25 from 2 to 4 PM. Anyone that participated in the 2006 Bangor Elks Soccer Shoot, 2006 Bangor Elks Hoop Shoot and Bangor Little League is invited to attend with their parents or guardians. Pen Argyl Sophomore Selected to Participate in Region 5 Orchestra Festival

Krysta Fogel, a sophomore at Pen Argyl Area High School, has been selected to participate in the Region 5 Orchestra Festival to be held at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster from February 28 through March 3. Krysta earned the honor after re-auditioning at the District 10 Orchestra Festival in January at Easton High School by achieving the position of First Chair Cello. She has been studying the cello since third grade and plays oboe in the concert band and saxophone in the jazz band. Krysta is an honor student who plays softball for the school. Outside of school she plays cello with the Pocono Youth Orchestra and tournament softball with the Lehigh Valley Outlaws.

Bangor Area High School Holding 14th Annual Winter Carnival

The Bangor Area High School Ecology Club will hold its 14th annual Winter Carnival on Friday, February 23. The event will be held in the high school gymnasium from 6 to 8 PM. Proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund as well as the schools clubs and organizations. The carnival is open to students and parents with games ranging in price from .25 to $1. Admission cost $1 and children under age 5 will be admitted free. A snow date of Monday, February 26 has been scheduled in the event of inclement weather.

Slate Belt COG Holding Monthly Meeting

The Slate Belt Council of Governments (COG) will meet at 7:30 PM on Wednesday, February 21 at the Washington Township Municipal Building. The public is encouraged to attend and discuss ways to improve the service to the Slate Belt COG municipalities. The Washington Township Municipal Building is located on Route 191 in Washington Township.

Plainfield Twp. Police Association Basket Bingo

The Plainfield Township Police Association is holding Basket Bingo from 1 to 4 PM on Sunday, February 25 at the Wind Gap Middle School Gymnasium. The event will feature Longaberger baskets. Story Time Returns to Bangor Public Library

Bangor Fire Department Seeking Aluminum Can Donations

The Bangor Fire Department is seeking aluminum can and loose aluminum donations to assist with their fundraising. The aluminum is taken to local recycling companies with the funds going toward the purchasing of new firefighting equipment and the exhibit housed at the Slate Belt Heritage Center. Aluminum may be dropped at Liberty Fire Company (67 North 8th Street), Rescue Fire Company #1 (Route 191), or 2nd Ward Fire Company (Northampton and Messinger Streets).

Five Points Inn Hosting Slate Belt Chamber Winter Business Luncheon

The Slate Belt Chamber of Commerce is holding its Winter Business Luncheon at 12 PM on Tuesday, February 27 at Five Points Inn and Deli. Marilyn Rettaliata will be the guest speaker and lecture on records management. The cost of the luncheon is $10 for members and $12 for non-members. Combat Corey’s Cancer at Kunkletown Rod & Gun Club

A benefit dinner will be held from 4 to 9 PM on Saturday, February 24 to benefit Corey, a 37-year-old husband and father to three young daughters. Corey is fighting an aggressive and spreading form of Melanoma and his family needs your donations to pay their medical bills and get Corey the treatment he needs. The benefit will be held at the Kunkletown Rod and Gun Club located on Upper Smith, just 6 miles off Route 209. The cost of admission is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors, and children under age 15 will be admitted free. The dinner will also feature a DJ, door prizes and a 50/50 drawing.

Nazareth Blue Eagles Sponsoring All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner

The Nazareth Area High School Blue Eagle Marching Band will hold an All-You-Can-Eat Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser on Saturday, February 24 at the Nazareth Area Middle School cafeteria from 4 to 7 PM. Students will be serving the food and groups of musicians will perform during the dinner. A raffle and bake sale will also be held. Jack Frost and Big Boulder Offering Military Appreciation Passes

Jack Frost and Big Boulder ski areas are showing their appreciation to the men and women of the United States Military during the month of February. All current servicemen and servicewomen will receive a snowpass and rental for $10. Spouses, dependents under age 18, reservists and retirees will receive 50% off regular rates. Artist from California to Exhibit at NCC

In conjunction with the New Arts Program in Kutztown, vivid watercolors, oil paintings and collages by visiting artist Roy Fowler will be on exhibit from February 27 through March 30 in Room 141, Communications Hall at Northampton Community College's main campus in Bethlehem Township.

Born in Santa Barbara, California, Fowler received a BFA from the College of Creative Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara. He has been a visiting artist at the University of Georgia, the University of Tennessee, and Universidad de Bellas Artes in Cuenca, Spain. Fowler has had solo shows in New York at the Anne Plumb Gallery, Art Resources Transfer, Inc. and the Cheryl Pelavin Gallery, and participated in many group shows nationwide.

A lecture by Fowler will take place on Thursday, March 8 at 11 AM in Communications Hall 141. A reception will follow in the Gallery. Northampton Community College is located at 3835 Green Pond Road in Bethlehem Township. For more information call the Gallery at 610-861-5062.

Easton Table Tennis Club Seeking Players

The Easton Table Tennis Club is looking to grow the club by adding more players. The club was co-founded by Tony Falcone of Nazareth and Tim McLaughlin of Williams Township and is open to men and women of any age or skill. Games are played Mondays and Fridays from 7 to 10 PM at Third Street.

Northampton County 4-H Center Hosting Equine Tack Swap

The annual Tack Swap at the Northampton County 4-H Center will be held on Saturday, April 14 from 11 AM to 2 PM. The tack swap is open to anyone who wishes to come to sell or to buy a wide variety of horse related items, apparel and tack. All sellers must have a table area, no consignment items will be sold at the tack swap. Sale areas will be offered to the public for a fee in the indoor area, in the pole barn area, and in the outdoor arena, weather permitting. Anyone wishing to sell during the tack swap must pre-register for spaces in the indoor and pole barn areas; outdoor areas will be allocated on the day of the event. Any size item may be sold. No live animals, pets or dogs are permitted at this event. Vendors are not allowed to sell food items. Persons with large equipment to sell are welcome to display on the open grounds for the registration fee. Food will be available during the tack swap courtesy of Backtrackers 4-H Horse and Pony Club. The Northampton County 4-H Center is located on Bushkill Center Road in Nazareth.
