Bangor Area School District Receives
Grant
BANGOR- Bangor Area School District,
in partnership with Pocono Slate Belt Youth for Christ, jointly
received a 21st Century Grant to provide students in the Bangor
area with a free after-school academic tutoring opportunity. Known
as Project Success, the program is meant to provide academic enrichment
activities for children in grades 4, 5 and 6.
Project Success will serve approximately
50 students and their parents/care givers. The goals of the program
are to increase academic performance particularly in regard to exceeding
state and local standards in reading and math, and to improve educational
and social behavior demonstrated by those students who attend regularly.
Students enrolled in the program will
receive a nutritious snack, supervised recreation and tutoring in
reading or math. Additional activities include art, music and cultural
presentations, character education, weekly field trips and an optional
Campus Life spiritual lesson. Instruction will be held at DeFranco
Elementary School on Mondays through Thursdays from 3 to 6 PM with
field trips scheduled on Fridays. Children and their parents who
choose to enroll in the Campus Life will be bussed to the First
United Methodist Church in Bangor for instruction.
In addition to the after school tutoring
and enrichment program, Project Success will host a six week summer
program operating Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 1 PM at the
First United Methodist Church. Dates for Summer School are June
18 to June 29 and July 9 to August 2, 2007. There will be no summer
school during the week of July 2.
Recently Merchants National Bank, supporters
of the Project Success program, donated $500 to help defray costs.
The Bangor Area School District and Pocono Slate Belt Youth for
Christ are grateful for the donation.
“Thanks to the Pocono Slate Belt
Youth for Christ Organization and the Bangor Area School District,
fifty young students will be able to fully achieve their absolute
potential in the areas of academics, culture and character development,”
stated Anthony J. Biondi, CEO at Merchants National Bank, adding
“The efforts of “Project Success will not only enrich
the students involved, but will also enrich our community which
will directly benefit from the astute evolution of these young children.
Merchants National Bank is elated to be able to contribute to such
a meaningful child development program.”

Civic Theatre 4th Annual
V-Day Benefit Performance
V-Day, the global movement to stop violence against
women and girls, went grassroots and global in 2004; more than 1,100
successful V-Day Worldwide and College Campaign events were held
around the world. The events were responsible for raising more than
$4 million through benefit productions of Eve Ensler's Obie Award-winning
play, "The Vagina Monologues."
For the fourth year, Civic Theatre of Allentown
joins this global movement in February, with a one-night only benefit
performance of "The Vagina Monologues," Saturday, February
10 at 8 PM. The performance will feature about 40 Lehigh Valley
women and is made possible by the generous support of many local
community members. Proceeds from this community event have each
year benefited Turning Point of Lehigh Valley. Last season, several
hundred patrons attended the sold-out show at Civic, which in the
past three years has raised more than $16,000 for the fight to end
violence against women and girls.
Turning Point of Lehigh Valley is a safe place where
victims of abuse and their children can find refuge. The not-for-profit
organization provides services to more than 3000 victims of domestic
violence in Lehigh and Northampton counties each year. More information
is available at www.tplv.org.
"The Vagina Monologues" will be performed
at Civic Theatre of Allentown, located at 527 N. 19th St., Allentown.
Tickets are $17 for admission alone, or $50 for a special patron
ticket. Special patrons will be acknowledged in the program, and
$33 of the patron ticket price is a tax-deductible contribution.
Tickets may be purchased by calling (610) 432-8943 or visiting the
Civic Theatre website at www.civictheatre.com.
